Personal Coaching Style

nature retreat with personal coach Karen MarcusThe 12th century mystical poet, Rumi, wrote:
“Let the beauty of what you love, be what you do.”

That describes what coaching is to me. I love being fully present and connecting with people, dancing in the moment so to speak, and I love being outdoors communing with nature. Coaching allows me to do more of both. But best of all coaching allows me to partake in others’ discovery of what that beauty and that doing means to them!

There are two guiding principles which define my approach to coaching:

First, movement and growth are essential to life. Inertia and stagnation strangle a person’s spirit and creativity. What’s important is to start moving. The first step will determine the next, and so on. You don’t need to know the final destination. In fact, being focused on a particular outcome can limit all the wonderful possibilities discovered through not knowing.

Second, being fully present in nature connects a human being with their authentic self. In nature, one becomes a witness to the interconnectedness of all life, the inevitability of change, and the beautiful display of a power beyond our comprehension.

When two people walk side by side along a path, an explorer and a guide, talking, observing and discovering—that is the essential experience of Stepping Out Coaching.

The Seasons of Change:Using Nature’s Wisdom to Navigate
Life’s Inevitable Ups and Downs

When dealing with life’s transitions, we can learn from nature’s example of the four seasons. In fall, when imminent change is showing its colors, it’s time to create a refuge and gather support around us.  Next we need time to winter, to turn inward for reflection and renewal, gradually letting go of our old story and starting anew. In late winter it’s time develop a plan around our new insights, so that we can spring into action, till the soil, and plant the seeds of our new identity or venture. Finally after all the reflection and hard work, we can enjoy the summer and allow the fruits of our labor to ripen.

This wonderful transition model was developed by my mentor Carol McClelland Ph.D. and has greatly enriched my coaching style. We need to understand that resisting change is futile! Change is growth. If we learn to embrace it, imagine all the time and energy we would save.  By understanding and allowing the time and space for the seasons of change, we can learn to move gracefully through life’s ups and downs.
